James Swindler, Professor and department chair, specializes in metaphysics, ethics and social philosophy and the history of western philosophy. The author of Weaving: An Analysis of the Constitution of Objects, some three dozen articles in professional journals and anthologies and numerous conference papers and reviews, his current research focuses on collective responsibility and freedom. Hailing from a small town in western Kansas, after a stint in the Air Force, Swindler was educated at the University of Kansas and taught at Westminster College, the University of Miami and Wittenberg University before coming to ISU in 2000. He served as editor of Southwest Philosophy Review for fifteen years and has held fellowships with the Eccles Humanities Center (University of Utah), the National Endowment for the Humanities (Indiana University and University of California-Santa Cruz), and the National Science Foundation. He won the Review of Metaphysics Dissertation Essay Prize and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He enjoys time with his wife, two sons and new daughter-in-law, traveling, fishing, photography, and astronomy, though Illinois skies are generally not very cooperative.
