Why Study Philosophy?

The study of philosophy allows students to gain insight into the world around them. The philosophy program hones students' critical thinking, argumentation, communication, information management, design and planning, research and investigation, and management and administration skills. All of these abilities are essential to any career. The philosophy program prepares students for a future in almost any field; the opportunities are endless. In fact, it is said that philosophy goes with everything!

Why Study Philosophy at Illinois State?

The Illinois State Philosophy Department has about 40-50 majors at any one time. Among Illinois public universities, only the University of Illinois, located in Champaign-Urbana, has more philosophy majors. Our group is large enough to reach a critical mass of student support and participation in departmental functions, but it is small enough that it allows us to provide one-on-one advising. Relatively small class size, especially in upper level courses, means that students get individual attention from all our instructors.

Philosophy Major

The Department offers students a philosophy major. Already have a major? Consider adding a second major in philosophy to supplement your plan of study and provide you with a broad liberal arts education.

Philosophy Minor

The Department offers students a philosophy minor and works in conjunction with other departments across the University to offer a number of interdisciplinary minors.
